The Rite of Spring.

Summer is officially here in the USA, but tomorrow is the 100th anniversary of the first performance of Stravinsky's "Rite of Spring". We might call this the official beginning of Modernism. Several artists working at that time in different media produced similarly radical work (Piet Mondriaan, Paul Strand, Kazimir Malevich, Gerrit Reitveld, etc.), but only one caused a riot. There is a nice account on the BBC radio programme "Witness" that includes an an interview with Stravinsky himself and Marie Rambert, Nijinski's assistant.
